Hypo Awareness Week 2019

We are pleased to announce that we are supporting a national campaign to raise awareness of a short-term complication of diabetes – Hypo Awareness Week.

Hypo Awareness Week is a seven-day campaign to raise awareness about, and reduce episodes of, hypoglycaemia, and will run from Monday, September 30, to Sunday, October 6, 2019.

Hypoglycaemia, also known as a hypo, takes place when the blood glucose levels of people with diabetes drop too low. They can feel shaky, unwell and, in extreme cases, can slip into a coma.

Our Group Managing Director, Chris Chapman, said: “As an ambassador for the treatment and prevention of diabetes, GlucoRx is delighted to help sponsor the Hypo Awareness Week campaign.

“Year on year GlucoRx continues to look for ways to push the barriers of science and healthcare to find ways to develop and deliver cost-effective products as well as raise awareness to bring benefits to both people with diabetes and the NHS.

“Hypo Awareness Week provides the perfect platform for people to spread the message about the complications associated with diabetes and we are delighted to be associated with this impactful week on the calendar.”

According to results from the 2017 National Diabetes Inpatient Audit1, around one in six hospitals beds are occupied by a person with diabetes.

Dr Gerry Rayman, the national clinical lead for the audit, has said that since 2010 there has been a 30 per cent reduction in severe hypoglycaemic episodes in hospitals, with Hypo Awareness Week helping to raise awareness annually since 20122.

However, almost one in five inpatients with diabetes experiences hypoglycaemia during their hospital stay3.

The annual campaign aims to raise awareness of hypoglycaemia in the UK by educating healthcare professionals about the short-term complications of diabetes.

As part of a week-long series of activities, trusts across the UK and the Republic of Ireland will be staging training events to raise awareness of the condition. Resources, including guidelines, leaflets and educational slides, will be used to help spread the word.

This programme is organised by Orange Juice communications and has been made possible with the support of Sanofi and GlucoRx which have had no input into any arrangements or content.

Last year, a total of 549 sites, the majority of which were hospitals, across the country took part in Hypo Awareness Week.

Dehydration, Diabetes and Summer — What You Need to Know

Sunshine, barbecues, days on the beach and ice-cold drinks; we love most of the things that come with summer.  But for people living with diabetes, the heat comes with a few challenges that can’t be ignored – particularly for those who are big on exercise and staying active.

You don’t have to compromise on all the good things summer brings, but it can’t hurt to be aware of the diabetic-specific risks you’re vulnerable to – dehydration is one of the biggest of those risks.

Remember how your doctor always said “Drink a lot of fluids”?

Dehydration can be a killer, and people with high blood sugar are at much higher risk of becoming dehydrated.

Higher blood-glucose levels, if not handled correctly, can significantly contribute to dehydration and vice-versa. Yes, dehydration can also send your blood sugar levels through the roof, so it’s a bit of a catch-22 unless you manage summer just like you manage your blood sugar.

When you haven’t had enough fluids, the sugar in your circulation system becomes more concentrated. The domino effect continues because high blood sugar leads to more frequent urination and loss of fluids. When our blood sugar is high for prolonged periods, our kidneys attempt to remove excess glucose from the blood. This is excreted as urine.

It’s also a fairly obvious fact that in the summer heat, liquids evaporate far more quickly – like perspiration on your body. That’s more fluid you could be losing. Opinions do vary on how much water you should consume daily but for the most part, the consensus is about two litres. Carrying a water bottle with you at all times and making a habit of taking regular swigs can really save your life.

Balance the positive and the negative

Exercise is good for your overall health. It improves mood, enhances energy levels in the long-term (if you do it regularly) and keeps you in shape.

But as a diabetic, you need to take exercise safety into account; firstly by measuring your glucose levels before your exercise begins. Secondly, and particularly in the summer heat, you should always be more mindful of the potential symptoms of dehydration.

Some of the symptoms are more obvious than others. Thirst, headaches, dry mouth, fatigue and general lethargy are the most common. You may also experience dizziness and confusion. Your pulse rate could go to either extreme (extremely weak or extremely rapid) and your urine becomes darker in colour when dehydrated.

Stay in the know

What is your biggest advantage as a person living with diabetes in summer? Knowledge, of course. In the information age, there are so many online resources that provide reliable information on managing the various types of diabetes and other blood sugar issues.

Aldershot Town F.C. & GlucoRx

Another football season has kicked off and we, GlucoRx, are proud to be supporting local team Aldershot Town Football Club again through the 2019-20 season.

Who are Aldershot Town FC?

Aldershot Town Football Club, also known as ‘The Shots’, were formed on 22nd April 1992. They play in the Vanarama National League (the fifth tier of English football) and are managed by Danny Searle. Aldershot Town play their home games at the EBB stadium, wearing a red and blue home kit and black and yellow away kit. The club has a blue badge featuring a phoenix, which is also the character for the club mascot.

GlucoRx’s involvement

We have proudly sponsored the East Bank at the EBB stadium since 2015, and from the 2016-17 season we have also been sponsoring the youth team’s matchday kits.

We currently sponsor the Aldershot Town FC youth team’s shirts, as well as the East Bank at the EBB Stadium

As well as an ongoing sponsorship with Aldershot Town FC, our GlucoRx team can be found at several home games throughout the season offering free blood glucose testing. We will be offering these again this season and will be present at more games than ever before, so keep an eye out for us on matchdays if you want your blood glucose levels tested for free!

Diabetes

It is calculated that around 1 million people have Type 2 diabetes but have not yet been diagnosed. This is the reason why GlucoRx offers free blood glucose testing, so we can help people keep an eye on their levels and see if they could be at risk. 6 in 10 people have no symptoms when they’re diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, but we want to help people identify it as soon as possible.
